Final Thoughts on Cover Design

* * *

Recording all of this information in your master publishing file is a tedious process, but it's worth it for the peace of mind. It's much easier to look up a license at the time your cover is created than it is to deal with a bunch of nasty lawyers should a dispute arise. Plus, once you secure the licenses, you'll have them forever as long as you back up your work.

Remember, copyright infringement suits can happen even after you die. If you're gone, your estate and heirs can still be sued for mistakes you made when you were alive.

You probably just uttered "oh shit" several times while reading this chapter. That's okay. Some of your book covers may be so old that you can't clear the licenses. If that's true, then get new covers as soon as you can manage, and make sure that you clear the licenses for those.

There are so many potential copyright issues with cover design that you have to be careful. While I don't recommend it for most people, there's something to be said about doing your own covers. If you create your own cover design, you'll know exactly what material got incorporated into your cover. It's a smart skill to cultivate if you're willing to learn it.

Now, to ask the question again: who owns the copyright to your book cover? Your designer owns the copyright to the design itself, but not necessarily the elements. It's up to you to protect yourself.
